home fire saftey zones
On June 7, 2021, Scotts Valley Fire Chief, Ron Whittle, gave an information-packed presentation about “Fire Season Preparedness & Fire Safety” to local senior citizens at a Scotts Valley Senior Life Association-sponsored Senior Life Online workshop.

(If you missed Chief Whittle’s presentation, you can watch the video recording here. (coming soon))

Chief Whittle discussed fire safety measures and services that everyone can benefit from including:
  • A complimentary Personal Home Assessment performed by Scotts Valley Fire Department staff:
    • Inside your home: to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, provide new batteries, install new detector units at no charge (if needed). (For more information about smoke detectors, click here. For more information about carbon monoxide detectors, click here.)
    • Outside your home: to identify areas for weed abatement, brush removal, etc. (For more information about the Scotts Valley Fire Department’s Weed Abatement Program, click here.)
  • A secure KnoxBox exterior emergency key receptable enables emergency personnel to enter your home in an emergency situation if you are incapacitated and cannot open your door. When you purchase the KnoxBox, the Scotts Valley Fire Department will install it at your home without a charge. (For more information about the KnoxBox, click here.)
  • Locate up-to-the-minute information about the status of fire hazards (e.g., wildfires) in your neighborhood, evacuation information, and fire and police department contact information at http://community.zonehaven.com. Find your FireZone at this website by first entering your complete address in the Search box (i.e., house number, street, city and state) located at the top of the screen. Then click on your Zone in the map.
    • Montevalle is in Fire Zone SCO E023
    • Spring Lakes Park is in Fire Zone SCO E016
    • Brookdale Scotts Valley is in Fire Zone SCO E015
    • Vista Del Lago is in Fire Zone SCO E016
  • The “File of Life” could save your life! Consider posting the File of Life on your refrigerator door to provide first responders (e.g., the fire department, police department, emergency medical technicians) who enter your home with your latest medical information, allergies, contact persons and more. Information included in the File of Life will also be available to emergency staff at the hospital.

Because medical emergencies can happen at any time, the File of Life saves critical time and therefore, lives. Montevalle will have more File of Life packets available for residents soon. (For more information about the File of Life, click here).
  • Work with your neighbors to create a Firewise Community, protecting your neighborhood, home and family safety. Communities and non-profit organizations who become a “Firewise Community” may qualify for grants to make fire safety improvements. Montevalle could possibly qualify as a Fireise Community and receive grants to make fire safety improvements. (For more information about building a Firewise Community, click here).
